Contractor comparison guide

How to compare St. Louis drainage companies

A drainage estimate should explain the water source, collection method, route, outlet, restoration, and maintenance—not merely name a product. Use this guide to compare local providers on the same core questions.

What work do drainage companies perform?

Depending on the company and site conditions, services may include drainage diagnosis, downspout extensions or buried solid pipe, catch basins, channel drains, French drains, grading, swales, erosion control, rain gardens, sump-discharge routing, or combined systems. Not every provider performs every service.

Compare the diagnosis before the price

Ask each provider to identify where the water originates, when it appears, why it collects, and where the proposed system will discharge. Two estimates that recommend different solutions are not directly comparable until the reasoning and scope are clear.

Questions to ask a St. Louis drainage contractor

  • What source of water is the proposed system designed to address?
  • Where will collected water discharge during a heavy storm?
  • What pipe, aggregate, fabric, inlets, cleanouts, and outlet protection are included?
  • How will utilities, roots, fences, patios, landscaping, and access affect the route?
  • Who confirms municipal permits, easements, right-of-way restrictions, or sewer approvals?
  • What lawn, hardscape, and planting restoration is included?
  • What maintenance and written warranty apply?
  • Can the company provide proof of appropriate insurance and relevant local experience?

How to compare written estimates

Request an itemized scope showing approximate dimensions, materials, excavation, hauling, discharge location, restoration, exclusions, payment schedule, expected timing, change-order process, and warranty. A low price may omit the outlet, restoration, difficult access, or another part of the finished system.

Greater St. Louis considerations

Jurisdiction can change within a short distance across St. Louis City, St. Louis County municipalities, surrounding Missouri counties, and Metro East Illinois. The correct approval authority may depend on the address and whether work affects a public system, easement, right-of-way, floodplain, stream, or neighboring property. Call 811 in Missouri or JULIE in Illinois before excavation and follow the instructions provided.

Request local drainage help

Use the project form to describe the symptom, ZIP code, state, and property conditions. If an independent provider is available for the location and project type, the provider may contact you about an on-site assessment. Submitting a request does not require you to hire anyone.
